The contest of the bow is over, and the contest of blood begins. Ulysses sheds his rags, takes his stand upon the threshold, and begins the systematic execution of those who defiled his home. From the first arrow through the throat of Antinous to the final purification of the hall with sulphur, Book 22 is a masterclass in swift, merciless justice.

The First Blood
Antinous is struck mid-drink. The gold cup falls as blood gushes from his nostrils. The shock of the suitors marks the end of their revelry.
The Treachery
Melanthius steals into the storeroom to arm the suitors. He is caught by the swineherd and stockman, strung up to the rafters to await a cruel end.
Minerva's Test
Disguised as Mentor, Minerva scolds Ulysses to test his courage. She eventually holds up her deadly aegis, sending the suitors into a panicked flight.
The Purification
Ulysses orders the halls scrubbed of blood and the bodies removed. Sulphur and fire are used to cleanse the pollution of the suitors' presence.
