THE ODYSSEY

Book IX: I am Noman

"I am Ulysses, Son of Laertes"

"Renowned among mankind for all manner of subtlety... there is nothing dearer to a man than his own country and his parents."

The Name

By revealing his name, Ulysses ends his anonymity but seals his fate with Polyphemus's father.

The Mission

He begins the "Apologoi"β€”the flashback narrative of his nine-year wandering.

The Casualty Count

Ulysses' journey is marked by the gradual erosion of his fleet. At Ismarus, the men's greed costs lives; at the Lotus island, they lose their will to return.

Ismarus (Cicones)

The men stayed to drink and feast against Ulysses' orders. Result: Six men per ship killed in a counter-attack.

The Lotus-Eaters

"Those who ate of it left off caring about home." Ulysses had to drag them back to the ships by force.

The Hubris of the Hero

Safely at sea, Ulysses cannot resist shouting his true name. Polyphemus then prays to Neptune with a specific four-part curse:

  • βš”οΈ Grant that Ulysses never reach his home alive.
  • βš”οΈ Or, if he must return, let it be late and in sore plight.
  • βš”οΈ Let him reach home after losing all his men.
  • βš”οΈ Let him reach home in another man's ship and find trouble.

"And Neptune heard his prayer."
