Summary

Narrated by Honor Harris, this historical novel is set during the English Civil War and explores the long-standing, tragic romance between Honor and the proud, reckless Royalist General Richard Grenvile. After a debilitating riding accident leaves Honor unable to walk on the eve of their planned wedding, she releases Richard from his engagement. They are separated for fifteen years, during which Richard rises to power as the “King’s General” while Honor remains solitary.

Their paths cross again amidst the chaos of the war as Honor takes refuge at the estate of Menabilly. Though they realize their love remains as strong as ever, circumstances—including Richard’s difficult personality, family betrayals, and the brutal violence of the conflict—prevent them from ever having a conventional life together.
