Summary
The story is framed as a tale told to an unnamed narrator by Makar Chudra, an elderly, free-spirited Gypsy. Makar recounts the tragic, legendary romance of two proud and independent Gypsies, Loiko Zobar and Radda. While they fall deeply in love with each other, both protagonists are fiercely committed to their personal freedom and refuse to submit to one another. Their intense passion is ultimately eclipsed by their immense pride.
The conflict reaches a devastating climax when Radda demands that Loiko bow down to her in front of their community to prove his love. Unable to reconcile his love with the humiliation of submission, Loiko stabs Radda to death. Radda’s father immediately kills Loiko in retaliation.
